This course will review the writings of both Biblical and extra-Biblical sources concerning Jesus Christ in order to answer the following questions:

  • What was the historical and geographical context of the New Testament?
  • What do the Gospels say about Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection?
  • What did non-Christians (Romans and Jews) say about Jesus?
  • What did the early Christians say about Jesus?
  • Why is the historical reliability of the New Testament important?


The Course Content includes:

  • History of the Levant up to the time of the New Testament
  • Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection as told in the Gospels
  • Non-Christian (Roman and Jewish) writings about Jesus
  • Extra-Biblical Christian writings about Jesus
  • Conversion of St. Augustine
  • Martyrdom of St. Polycarp
  • Conclusion and Summary

Aaron Simms is an author and writer specializing in Christian theology, history, and classical studies. He is also a pastor in The Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod and a member of the American Academy of Religion.

He has a B.S. in International Affairs from the Georgia Institute of Technology, an M.S. in International Relations (National Security Concentration) from Troy University, and a pastoral diploma (4-year Specific Ministry Pastor program) from Concordia Seminary St. Louis.

His interests include the foundations of the Christian faith, history, current events, and international affairs. When he's not writing, blogging, preaching, or working, he enjoys spending time with his family, fishing, hiking, and running.
